Why We Say, “Cheese”
With all the photos we take of our friends, families (and of ourselves), we want to have nice, bright smiles.
It’s not clear when photographers began asking us to say, “Cheese,” but we do know that photographers all over the world now make the same request. The word is not just a silly way to make us smile…when we say the long, “eee”, it actually makes us part our lips and show our teeth.
If you look back at old, Victorian-era photos, it’s hard to find one photo of a smiling family. Not everyone, in those days, was unhappy. It’s more likely that many people back then didn’t want to smile because they didn’t want to show their teeth.
Dentistry, especially Cosmetic Dentistry, has come so far in our lifetime, that we forget how difficult it was for people to get good dental care in the past.
Why We Have Yellow Teeth
Most of us start out with beautiful, pearly white teeth.
As we age, even if we take good care of our teeth, the layer of enamel that makes up the outer part our teeth, begins to thin. The yellow-brown substance inside our teeth, called dentin, begins to show through the thinning enamel.
That’s just a natural part of aging and, like other aspects of aging, it’s unavoidable.
There are other things that can cause yellow teeth, that are avoidable, like:
- coffee
- tea
- tobacco
- dry mouth
- excessive sugar
- acidic foods and beverages
- alcohol
- poor oral hygiene
Thanks to the advances in Cosmetic Dentistry, we can have whiter teeth at any age.
