What is Plasma Rich in Growth Factors (PRF)?
Plasma Rich in Growth Factors is found in our blood. It helps the body to heal when there is damage to bone or tissue.
How is PRF used in dentistry?
There are several ways to use PRF, depending on the procedure being done. PRF is most often used in dentistry for faster healing for dental implants. There are several steps involved in placing dental implants, which can take months to complete. The use of PRF can greatly reduce this time, from months to weeks.
PRF is placed directly on to the site of the implant, after tooth extraction. It stimulates the healing of bone and tissue at the site, which is necessary for a good outcome.
This stimulation of the healing process is especially important in older patients and in patients who have decreased bone regeneration.
How is PRF obtained?
One of the best things about using PRF, is that it comes from the patient, which makes it safe and easy to use.
Thanks to incredible advances in dentistry, treatment with PRF can now be done quickly and easily in our office:
- A small amount of blood a taken from the patient.
- The blood is spun, for a few minutes, in a centrifuge in our onsite laboratory, which separates it into ‘layers’.
- The ‘layer’ of PRF is separated and placed in a tube for Dr. Stone to use.
The PRF is like a gel, and can be placed directly on to the site of an extracted tooth.
Because it is the patient’s own blood that is being used, there is no risk of rejection or an allergic reaction.
What are the advantages of using PRF?
- Enhances and accelerates healing
- Enhances and accelerates bone regeneration
- Enhances and accelerates soft tissue healing
- Safe
- Simple
- Cost effective
- Decreases the chance of infection
- Decreases waiting time to complete the implant procedure
