What is Teeth Reconstruction?
Teeth Reconstruction means rebuilding damaged or missing teeth, and is done for both cosmetic and medical reasons, to improve the structure and function of the mouth and jaw.
Each one of our teeth is part of a complex system that helps us speak, chew, taste and, even, breathe properly. The system includes a network of muscles, tissues and nerves that affect, not only how we look, but how we feel.
Worn or missing teeth can cause:
- Frequent headaches
- Chronic jaw pain
- Neck pain
- Jaw clicking or popping
- Muscle tenderness
- Difficulty chewing
- Low self-esteem
How is the Process for Teeth Reconstruction Done?
Teeth Reconstruction process is unique for each individual. It can be as simple as the repair of a chipped tooth or as intricate as maxillofacial surgery, to restore oral function due to trauma, disease or birth defects.
Prosthodontists, like Dr. Stone, have special training in Teeth Reconstruction. Patients are often referred to a Prosthodontist for Teeth Reconstruction.
Starting with an initial assessment, a treatment plan is prepared and a time frame for the process is established.
Some Teeth Reconstruction procedures are covered by insurance and some are not. We work with our patients’ insurance companies to make sure they get optimal coverage for a procedure, and offer CareCredit to our patients who need assistance with payments. If more than one procedure is needed, they can be done over a period of time to limit stress and make it easier on the budget.
What are Teeth Reconstruction Procedures?
Thanks to continued research in technique and materials, Prosthodontists have many tools to use for Teeth Reconstruction.
Here are just a few procedures used, that can greatly improve the health and beauty of a smile:
Dental Bonding – is a simple process that can correct the shape of a tooth and repair small chips. Bonding usually takes one visit and is not painful, so anesthesia is not usually required.
Veneers – are thin, porcelain shells that are bonded right onto a tooth to improve the shape or color of the tooth. First used in Hollywood to give movie stars perfect smiles, veneers remain a good option for improving the appearance of teeth, especially front teeth. Veneers require 2-3 visits because each one has to be custom made. Learn more about veneers and their cost here.
Dental Crowns – are placed over an existing tooth that has been cracked or broken. Crowns have the advantage of keeping the original tooth intact and replacing it with a healthy looking crown. Learn more about caps and crowns here: https://drstonedds.com/crown-vs-cap/
Dental Implants – are a wonderful option for replacing a missing tooth. The implant goes right into the jaw and preserves the bone in the jaw that helps keep our facial structures intact. After an implant is placed and a temporary crown put onto the implant, a period of healing time is required for the body to secure the implant into the jaw. The process takes several weeks and has the advantage of being a long-term solution. Learn more about dental implants here.
A Prosthodontist can not only perform Teeth Reconstruction but can also offer preventive solutions, like night guards, teeth cleaning and patient education, to make sure that teeth stay healthy.
